Whether they intend to or not, having guests over can create problems with dog behavior. Even “dog-people” can cause problems and it’s something you need to be aware of. They might not mind your dog jumping up on them now, but give it a few months and see how they feel when it weights over 50 pounds and it needs to stop jumping on everyone.
Or maybe your guest tells you that they don’t mind your dog being so excitable, it’s just a puppy after all. Then they get them overexcited and they start running around and breaking things. A puppy is only a puppy for so long, but the idea that it’s okay to run around the home – which guests have instilled in them – will be around for much longer. What can you do in that situation? Most people will hide their annoyance and embarrassment behind a smile because no one wants to tell a guest that they can’t do something and get angry at them.
It’s time you did your pup – and yourself – a favor by telling them (as nicely as possible) that you are working on teaching your dog proper manners and obedience. If your guests don’t listen and the dog continues to misbehave then take the advice of a dog trainer and put them in their crate or on their leash so they can’t pick up any more bad habits.
Stay in Control
Sometimes the complete opposite happens. You have guests that don’t like dogs at all and are afraid of them. They would prefer your dog to leave them alone. This nervousness can trigger unwanted behavior from a dog. Dogs really can smell fear and they can recognise nervous behavior, which in turn causes them to become nervous and afraid themselves. The problem is exacerbated if you get annoyed with the guest or frustrated with the dog. It means we have lost control – either of our dog or ourselves – and that’s when the mistakes begin.
Even if your pup has been to a dog trainer in Naples and has become very well behaved, and the guests are just as good, problems can arise. Maybe we know our puppy does some really cute things and we want to show these off to our friends. It’s only natural to be proud of the latest addition to the family and want to show them off. Not to mention socialization is healthy for a new puppy. Even so, there are some dangers to be aware of.
We want to be sure our dogs behave when we have friends over, but guests themselves can be a massive distraction for our pups. They can become nervous, excited, awed, or cautious. There’s a chance your dog will respond in an entirely different way than expected. A good dog trainer knows that attempting to control the dog in this situation can lead to even more unwanted behavior.
Play it Safe
Play it safe with your dog when you have guests over. Stay in control and help them stay calm and learn how to be patient. Consider using a crate and a leash. Puppies have to understand that guests are coming to visit you and not them, and that they can only join in if they are invited. Train guests as well as dogs. Make sure they know to basically ignore a pup when they arrive and not treat them like the highlight of their visit. They shouldn’t touch or talk to the pup when they arrive, or it is just rewarding them for being overexcited and rude.
Make sure to maintain the positive habits your dog learns when greeting guests or they may start to regress and start to misbehave again when you have guests over. It’s great to have a dog that welcomes guests and behaves when they are around. They’ll make you proud and guests will love them.
